Want to play a role in the building of this educational project?

If so... read on.

The bioteach project is now in an important transition stage that plans to shift its development to the student community at large. As such, we hope to attract a number of dedicated, enthusiastic, and creative students who can ensure the project's future continuation.

The call for summer job applicants is now closed due to the overwhelming response. Thanks for your interest, and keep in touch.
We will be looking for submissions in the near future..

Two types of candidates are being invited to apply to be part of the summer team. They are:

ONE: (These have been filled) A student core consisting of 3-5 undergraduate/graduate students who will be primarily responsible for general delivery of the final web ready product. This team will also need to interact with various agencies/organizations who have expressed interest in collaborations, as well as define a mandate for the continuation of bioteach as a student organization. These are summer positions (May to mid August) paying approximately $1200 a month, with the option of interested candidates continuing their involvement (with a small stipend) with the bioteach project during the following school year. Individuals will likely have fluid roles within the project but particular needs include the following:

  • Editors for the main textbook section: responsible for final editions and image suggestions, category updates/requests. This section is the most central part of the web site and is likely our most heavily viewed area. Consequently, candidate(s) should have a good science background as well as strong writing skills. Some familiarity with web authoring is handy. Interest in science journalism is also a plus.

  • Editors for the journal section: responsible for light editing of strong article submissions, developing subject themes, and general layout design. Students should have a very strong science and bioethics background. Familiarity with business publishing software such as Adobe Pagemaker or Adobe Indesign is handy. Interest in science journalism is also a plus.

  • Editors for the teaching resource section: this will most likely be a very active area of bioteach (frequent updating) and consequently, students responsible for this section must be comfortable with web authoring skills. This includes use of programs such as Dreamweaver and/or Adobe GoLive. Familiarity with Visual SourceSafe is also a plus , This position is ideal for those interested in a career in education.

  • Graphic artists/designers: these students will produce necessary images needed for the various submissions (primarily associated with textbook area). These students will also project manage any other volunteers with graphics capabilities as the need warrants. Students should have comparable artistic skill to images seen in the textbook section and will be required to submit samples of their computer artwork as part of their application.

  • Web administrators: these students should have strong familiarity with network logistics, and website/server maintenance. Experience with perl is also a plus.

Students who are up to the challenge of expanding their abilities to the skillsets described above should email a short informal cover note with a one page CV attachment. Send applications addressed to Dave Ng at db@interchange.ubc.ca with a subject heading "summer position" no later than April 15th, 2004. Interviews will be conducted and successful candidates chosen by the end of third week of April.

TWO: Representatives from science-related student, university, research, advocacy and/or education organizations who can act as an liason between their organization and bioteach are also being courted. Student groups in particular are invited to collaborate. As a website that has been recently recieving approximately 20000 to 30000 hits per day (February 2004), this is a good opportunity to increase the profile of an organization.
Interested collaborators will: aid in article and textbook authoring especially in topics that reflect their interests; aid in canvassing, managing and initial selection/editing of submissions from their prospective audiences; and asked to contribute significantly in our biopersonality and teaching resource areas.
