Submission Guidelines

BIOTEACH SUBMISSIONS GUIDELINES:

We, the tireless editors, are looking for the following:

Things that inform - interestingly, accurately, fairly, and creatively.
Things that are technical in nature.
Things that are ethical in nature.

Specifically, we are looking for:

Science articles written for a previous assignment on which you recieved a good grade. Essentially, the submission process is straightforward in that the work is already done. Upon submission, we will look at whether the article is amenable to re-editing for any one of our many sections. Please take a look at the site to get a sense of the types of articles we like, but in reality we are keen to see as many papers as possible.

Please only word doc and gif attachments please.

For those, already in the business of writing, we are not formal enough to require a query. A short cover paragraph, however, would be nice.

Choice of topics is completely open as long as there is some link to the sciences, with a preference towards the life sciences. Note, we are particularly interested in articles of the ethical, societal, and economical nature.

Objectivity is generally prefered, in that controversial topics deserve a well rounded examination. However, we realize at times, that informed bias is important. Impress us please with your debating skills.

If your submission attracts attention, we may ask that you reformat any references you site. This will likely follow rules as according to the Nature Biotechnology format. For example:

  • Journal:
    Strauss, S., Boerjan, W., Cairney, J., Campbell , M., Dean, J., Ellis, D., Jouanin, L., Sundberg, B. Forest biotechnology makes its position known. Nature 17, 1145 (1999).

  • Text:
Geankoplis, C. J. Transport Processes and Unit Operation (3rd Ed.) 586-587 (Prentice Hall, Toronto, 1993) .

  • Website:
Cellfor Inc. (2003) When can we grow a better tree? Retrieved August 17, 2004 from: www.cellfor.com

Plagiarism will not be tolerated.

A glossary may be necessary if a lot of technical terms are used in the article.

Payment and copyright: Unfortunately at this point in time, we cannot reimburse you for your efforts. However, it appears that our site commands enough traffic to merit it a publication for your CV. Full copyright remains with the author, which is yet another reason why you shouldn't plagiarize. We ask, however, for two things.

  1. That if reprinted elsewhere, we still retain the right to use the article for bioteach's purposes.
  2. That http://bioteach.ubc.ca is acknowledged for recognizing the quality of your article first.

Response Time: Depends on the submission load. Usually, it is no longer than two weeks. If you don't hear from us, resubmit and please accept our apologies.

Submissions should be made by email: ambl@interchange.ubc.ca

We are also interested in attracting interns to help edit or write material specifically for the site. Please email as above.
